How is legionella transmitted?<\/h1>\n

First of all, what is legionella?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Legionella (Legionella pneumophila) is a bacterium present in water, ventilation systems and damp soil. Legionella is responsible for legionellosis, an infectious disease that especially affects the respiratory system.<\/p>\n

How is it transmitted?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Legionellosis is generally transmitted through the respiratory tract by inhalation, aspiration or microaspiration of aerosols containing the bacterium. Since legionella is found in water, it can enter the lungs due to splashes or vaporization of water.<\/p>\n

Disease Development<\/h2>\n

Once the Legionella bacterium reaches the lungs, it is phagocytized by pulmonary macrophages: since they are unable to kill it or inhibit its growth, the bacterium multiplies and causes lysis.<\/p>\n

Legionnaires’ disease<\/strong> therefore results in acute pneumonia, sometimes accompanied by gastrointestinal, neurological and cardiac symptoms. Pontiac fever<\/strong>, on the other hand, is a milder form of Legionellosis and presents with flu-like symptoms.<\/p>\n
